If you are the head of school, or head of communications leading marketing efforts for your private school, then I want to take a few minutes to talk to you about the future of marketing for your school. Here’s why we should talk.
First, who am I, and how did I start doing SEO for Private Schools.
My name is Francis McGovern and I started doing SEO for Private Schools back in 2007. Previous to starting my own consulting practice, I worked at the search engine Lycos and then ran an SEO firm in the Boston area.
I started working with Travis Warren of WhippleHill on a project to help their Podium system (at the time,) become more search engine friendly. I was grateful for the chance to work with him (he’s a visionary) and help him and some of the great people at WhippleHill.
The opportunity came about because certain schools were complaining that after a relaunch of their sites, they were losing traffic and inquiries. We took a look at one school in particular. Eagle Hill School in Hardwick, MA. We worked on a pilot program and then we presented at NAIS in 2008 on how we were able to double enrollment over a six month period.
Our results for schools were so good, and I worked very closely and collaboratively with with WhippleHill for a few years until my consulting practice Qscholar was acquired by WhippleHill (now Blackbaud) in 2011 and I continued to work them until 2013, training and building an SEO practice within WhippleHill.
Now I focus on providing a full service marketing offering for both private schools, Universities and education based start-ups. I have worked with over 40 private and independent schools to help them succeed and get results in competitive niche areas. We carefully analyze a school’s competitive profile and develop a complex strategy that’s designed to advance the school in the direction of sustainable marketing results.
Many schools we have worked with still have great results, years after the program is complete.

Now let’s talk about the future. You have a vision. But how do you implement that vision for your school online? As a leader at your school, how do you navigate the future seas of private school marketing? Do you know how best to chart the course into the future? You need to be a little Ahab and a little Starbuck (single-minded and dedicated.) As more and more schools do SEO, the more competitive it will become and this means that schools will need to target a wider breadth of keywords and use more aggressive techniques to pass ahead of competitors.
I believe that future is going to play out online through search and social media and video and new and different technology, some of which has not even arrived yet. Everything can be leveraged for SEO results for your school. You need to choose the right story-telling tactics and outpace your competitors. You need to have a website that illustrates the dynamic aspects of your school and then a content strategy that tells story of your school in an engaging way that both educates and interests your potential students and parents.
I would like to help you develop that strategy. We have a process that works but it requires dedicated efforts for your marketing, and you have to do it every day.
I have worked with and advised over 40 schools. Here are some of the schools I have worked with or advised about SEO. New Hampton School, Kimball Union, Cranbrook School, York Prep, Madeira, Sonoma Country Day School, Belmont Hill School, Walnut Hill School, Groton, University School, Tower Hill School, Tilton School, Stratford, St. Lukes, Shore Country Day School, Meritas, Rivers, Ancona, Fenn and many many more.
